The oval plastic helps to evenly distribute the weight of the lead on the line helping to avoid any damage and provides a smoother transition for the line when a fish takes as opposed to a straight swivel. They are also perfect when fishing with the Portland rig, providing both the buffer bead and swivel in one piece of terminal tackle for the sliding snood. These beads are not designed to take the full force of a cast and are unsuitable for pulley rigs.
